REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

"Gary James's ambitious aim is to tell the history of football in the Manchester area and thereby establish its importance to the city and its environs.

"This is a heavyweight volume - literally, as it spans 512 closely packed pages, handsomely illustrated with rare photographs and terrific facsimile documents: newspaper clippings, pages from programmes, correspondence etc.

"It is a real achievement and the first time the history of the game in the region has been told."

Joyce Woolridge, When Saturday Comes

"... this enthralling trawl through Manchester's football history." 4 Stars

Steve Morgan, Four-Four-Two

"Book of the week"

Ian Herbert, The Independent

"This is an absorbing book that will appeal greatly to a wider audience than just supporters of the 'Manchester' clubs."

David Powter, Winger

"Among the many fascinating stories in the book is a 1972 letter from Manchester United to Manchester City asking if they would like to make an offer for a forward − 26-year-old George Best. The book also alleges that City and United joined forces in the 1930s to stop a third Manchester side from joining the league and that a City director in the 60s asked United if they would like to merge."

 Author Activity & Events 2009

The Spring issue of "The Author", the journal of the Society of Authors, contains a two page article on the trials and tribulations of being a specialist non-fiction author written by "Manchester - A Football History" author Gary James.  The Society of Authors (www.societyofauthors.org) provides tremendous support to published authors and Gary has been a member for many years.

On Saturday 21st March 2009 Gary lectured on the history of Manchester football in the Council Chamber at Manchester Town Hall during the Manchester Histories Festival.

In front of a 100 strong audience of football fans, academics, journalists, and general members of the public, Gary's talk followed the growth of Mancunian football from 1608 until the late 1930s.

It focused on four main themes - the story of an alternative MCFC and how City & United combined to stop them from threatening United's existence; How one woman's fight against scuttling (gang warfare) led to the formation of City; Manchester's first national success and the defining moment when football became important to Mancunians; and how bribery and scandal led to the near destruction of one of Manchester's leading sides and the first successes of the other.

The final batch of "Manchester A Football History" has now been distributed to booksellers.  This means that no copies are available direct from the publishers.  It also means the book is likely to sell out in bookstores shortly.

Unfortunately, we are unable to satisfy trade enquiries and have already had to reject orders from three national book chains.
